4th of July and your K-9... Not a good combination for most...

It's just around the corner, the day where some of our K-9's look for places to hide, push themselves up close to their Guardian's looking for that little extra security of protection, shake nervously where they lie and even one of the highest times when our K-9's come up missing.  It's Fourth of July.  Our K-9's hearing is 10 times more sensitive than a human’s, so the fireworks are likely to cause your dog some anxiety, stress and fear. In general, fireworks are typically set off twice a year, maybe more in some areas, and these loud explosions (to the K-9 ear) could possibly catch them off guard, confusing them and/or making them nervous and on edge for rest of the evening and even worse, their Fright/Flight response could kick in resulting in their escaping and becoming lost.

Here are some tips if you would like to have an enjoyable evening out during these events:

If you are thinking of bringing your K-9, you may want to reconsider for fireworks are not only set off in a controlled setting, others around you may be setting of their own fireworks as well.  This could be a hazardous situation for your K-9.

July is typically when the weather becomes hot, so if you are thinking of bringing your K-9 with you and leaving them in your car while you enjoy the fireworks thinking they will be safe from the loud noises, repeated flashes of bright lights and the excitement from the crowd, PLEASE RECONSIDER.  Not only is the temperature going to rise in the car, and although you have your windows cracked it still gets hot in there. Shutting your K-9 off in a small, confined area without you next to them could cause them to have severe anxiety and increases their stress more than it already is when they start hearing the explosions of 4th of July,
not to mention strangers passing by.

Many of us live in an area where the fireworks are displayed close to home, and we want to go outdoors to view them or walk into town to be part of the community in celebrating the Independence Day with friends. It would be better for your fur friend to remain at home not only to protect their sensitive hearing an already anxious K-9 will become even more anxious.  It is always better to keep them indoors without access to the outside until you return and the activities have quieted down.  You will want them to be in a safe place within the home where they feel comfortable be it in a crate, if they are crate trained or in a room they feel the safest in and by doing this, the least amount of harm will come to them or even your home.  Take them for a nice long walk prior to the events, this will expend some of their energy, making them a little more tired and make them less likely to over exert themselves when the excitement of the outdoors begin.  While they are home alone during these activities, you will want to lessen their anxiety by closing the curtains which will help muffle some of the loud sounds of the fireworks, turn the lights on to help decrease the bright flashes and turn on either the radio or television and raise the volume slightly higher than you would if you were home, this will help block the loud "bangs."  You could even go as far as putting in earplugs or cotton balls in their ears to help decrease the sound.

The best option to help decrease the anxiety of K-9's are for you to be at home with them.  This way, you will be in the room to monitor them during the festivities and just your presence will help decrease the nervousness they may be feeling.  If they start to become nervous and fidgety, try not to comfort them for this may instill in them it is ok to be afraid.  Instead, be cheerful, and calm, have an activity ready in case you start noticing a change in their mood.  Keep their favorite toy handy, play ball or have a Kong stuffer filled with their favorite treats such as

House Wolf K-9 Dog Biscuits.

Some dogs may never have issues with loud noises when they are younger, however these same dogs as they get older may suddenly become terrified of sudden flashes, bright lights and loud noises and this is due to changes in their hearing so ALWAYS BE ON ALERT AND GUARD.  Let both you and your Best Fur Friend have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July.

When Making Homemade Dog Treats

Make them Healthy by using healthy ingredients...

We have come across many sites on the Internet, Face book, Blogs, etc. giving you recipes for homemade dog treats and we are surprised at how many of these recipes have unhealthy ingredients in them that our K-9's would be healthier without.  The ingredients our K-9's should never have are Wheat products, Corn, Salt and Refined sugars...

Here is a list of what we find as unhealthy ingredients for our K-9's:
Corn Meal, Corn Starch & Corn Syrup
Wheat and White flours
Regular peanut butter
White Sugar
Brown Sugar
Store bought chicken stock ( for they add many other ingredients)
Vanilla
Commercial applesauces
Bad oils(canola, vegetable...)

A list of some ingredients we find healthy for making dog treats:
Organic oats
Quinoa
Buckwheat
Oat flour
Free Range eggs
Honey
Black Strapped Molasses
Organic Cold Pressed Coconut Oil
Olive Oil
All Natural Organic Peanut butter
Organic Brown Rice
VEGGIES:  Sweet potato, carrot, peas, zucchini, kale, apples, pumpkin, spinach, parsley...
Ground ginger, Turmeric, Small amounts of Cinnamon
Berries: Blueberry, raspberry, black berry...

Do not hesitate to alter or exchange ingredients if needed to make the recipe healthier for your K-9.  For example: Substituting wheat or white flour with oat flour or regular peanut butter to all natural and organic.

A DOG TREAT IS NOT "JUST" A DOG TREAT

What you choose to feed your dog is the single and most important factor in keeping them healthy.  Take treats for an example.  They are not all the same.  Many of the dog treats that are on the market today contain ingredients to preserve them, to enhance flavors, to keep them soft and pliable.  These type of additives can be potentially toxic to our fur family members over a period of time.  What goes into a healthy dog treat should have naturally occurring nutrients, very little if any empty calories with low quality vitamins and minerals which are often added to the conventional dog treats

If you are treating your dog with all natural and organic treats used from ingredients that are USDA certified organic & natural, you are giving them a healthy treat that excludes the use of poor or questionable ingredients such as by-products as well as potentially harmful and toxic synthetic ingredients. The quality of the ingredients used in your dog treat is a major factor on how much nutrition is in the biscuit as well as how much your dog is receiving and helps, along with a good diet their health maintenance and healing after injuries.  True and unaltered ingredients contain much higher levels of nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants and minerals.

As with the majority of organic products, all natural and organic dog treats may cost you a little more than the average treat.  However, organic treats are much healthier and well worth the extra cost to keep the health and well being of your Fur family member at their optimal functioning level.

At House Wolf K-9 Dog Biscuits, we follow these same ideas in what we put into our biscuit treats.  We use only the best of  natural and organic ingredients from  Wild Caught Alaskan Salmon, All Natural Organic Peanut Butter.  One thing we can always guarantee is we will Never use Wheat, Corn or Salt nor will we use artificial flavoring, coloring, or preservatives.

Dear Guardian

With all the research that has been done on the ingredients that go into dog treats there are ingredients that shouldn't even be there.  The Artificial colors, flavorings, preservatives and much more.. Shouldn't we wonder how should our dog treats be flavored? The answer is simple: their treats and food should just be itself.  There is no need to add flavors, colorings or preservatives. So many of the colorings, flavorings and preservatives are slowly killing our K-9's.Look at the small print on your store bought Dog Treats.  The majority of them read more like ingredients for rocket fuel or a science experiment rather than treats for consumption by your K-9.   The majority of the larger companies have more of an interest in your wallets than the health and well being of your Dogs or Pets that we call family members.  Guardians who have their dogs’ life-long health foremost in their minds are willing to pay more for more natural products that don’t needlessly expose their dogs to potentially toxic chemicals. It is the artificial colorings (dyes) such as red #3, green, blue or yellow followed by ANY number one should be suspicious of since these chemicals that are used to dye foods are a group of highly reactive molecules that may interact with DNA and increase the mutation or cell transformation. The BHT, BHA, TBHQ, are artificial preservative known to possibly cause cancer.Being Guardians of 16 years to three fur-kids and feeding them the "traditional" way with commercial foods and treats from the stores and the best of Vet care along with more love than we could possibly give we questioned why did they all pass from either Cancer, Diabetes, Glandular problems, Cushings, and other medical issues, We began our own research 6 years ago by reading Dr. Wendy Volhard, Dr. Pitcairn, Dr. Marty Goldstein, Rodney Habib from Planet Paws Pet Essentials, and others, we changed their dietary plans to a more holistic way of feeding. We began to make more homemade foods and treats.  When our last fur-kid, Kayak passed in 2012 we promised ourselves when we rescued again, and we did ( Keysha & Struga ) we promised we would never feed commercial again.  Yes, we proudly feed Raw and all the treats Keysha & Struga receive are House Wolf K-9 Dog Biscuits and other treat recipes we make that are found on our House Wolf Face Book Page.We stand proudly behind the name House Wolf K-9 Dog Biscuits and each flavor of biscuit treats we make for you will Never find artificial colorings, flavorings or preservatives.  We also will never add Wheat, Corn or Salt.
